Delegate | AND House of Delegates | - | During my first year I served as a Professional Issues Delegate and represented the Weight Management DPG and the Pediatric Nutrition DPG. In this role, I participated in the DPG Executive Committee conference calls twice a year to update them on HOD issues and discussions and to solicit their input. I created narrated PowerPoint presentations that provided Continuing Professional Education Units that both DPGs used with their members and that I also shared this with the Minnesota AND members. This was a very successful way to extend outreach and to obtain valuable input from members about their concerns and priorities. My last 2 years I was the HOD Representative for the Pediatric DPG. I continued to reach out to the membership through e-blasts and surveys, and again, valuable member feedback was obtained. Whereas some delegates felt that their constituents provided little to no input, I had over 80 members respond to inquiries regarding Mega Issues. I believe that my desire to truly represent members/constituents was recognized, and thus I was able not only to keep members abreast of developments, but also to make their voices be known.
Chair, Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group | AND | - | Prior to being elected as Chair-Elect, I had volunteered with the DPG in many different capacities. I can honestly say that I started "at the bottom," if there is such a thing as a bottom. I volunteered for whatever was needed to develop my leadership skills and to develop a meaningful relationship with members. My being elected Chair-Elect was a culmination of many years of working with others, a commitment and devotion to this DPG, and to the discipline of Pediatric Nutrition. During my tenure many changes were made, including hiring an administrative assistant and a copy editor, expanding the number of volunteers working on our website, holding monthly conference calls with the Executive Committee and maximizing communication amongst special interest groups. I believe that, with the help of the EC, I was able to foster strong working relationships. I also feel strongly that members expect, and deserve, leadership that is sensitive to their priorities and works hard to serve them.
President, Atlanta District Dietetic Association | AND | - | My most significant contribution was to increase membership within our district by 35% during my tenure. This happened through a concerted effort to reach out to RDs and DTRs who had not renewed their membership and to ask for their input regarding what we could do to serve them if they were to rejoin. Members also were placed at the top of our agenda with planning that included all areas of dietetics, and with sensitivity to geographic location of our member meetings. I strived to keep members informed via meetings and regular e-mail communication. With Atlanta being such a large geographic location and many members not being able to attend meetings, e-mail updates were sent continuously with summaries of meetings and opportunities to get involved in their closer geographic area. I am proud to have met so many amazing RDs and DTRs, and I believe that each of them could feel my commitment to them and to our profession. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
