House of Delegates (HOD) Speaker-elect |
|
I am a trained and certified mediator and facilitator for many allied health organizations. As a lawyer, teacher and national speaker on legal, ethical and nutritional issues, I am frequently called upon to communicate with diverse groups of people. I served as the delegate from TN for 12 years and acquired experience with identifying and addressing many issues impacting the profession. I am proud of my accomplishments and ability to generate responses to all our mega issues from my constituents. I also am a mentor to many other dietitians both in my DPG and my TN affiliate |

Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
Chair Ethics Committee | American Dietetic Association (now the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/AND) | - | I served on the Ethics committee of AND from 2008-2011. During my tenure, the committee developed several new ethics case studies for use for continuing education purposes. I was a panel participant on a video that was prepared to help members understand the new Code of Ethics. I have presented at two national FNCE meetings on the topic of ethics and our profession. I strongly argued for the inclusion of ethics hours in the professional portfolios of all members. I continue to develop and present new webinars on this topic yearly.
President | Tennessee Dietetic Association/ TDA (now TN Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) | - | During my tenure as the President of TDA, we developed a new strategic plan for our state. Prior to this, each new President would start their year by developing their own agenda and goals. One other colleague and I translated member feedback into a stepwise progression of goals, with measurable performance standards, to be achieved over five years. I continue to serve as a strategic consultant to the board. My board was the most diverse board ever seated at our state level.
President and Lieutenant Governor | Kiwanis | - | As one of the first female President's of a service club in Memphis, TN, I began several new programs that continue today. We developed a reading program for several inner city schools and gave the schools the books we read to the students. I participated in the monthly BBQ picnics for the women's shelter. I am leading our club's current major fundraiser to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the Earth. As part of the International organization, our club is raising $81,000. We are over 82% of our goal and have been recognized for our success.
Delegate | TDA and TAND | - | I have developed many surveys & solicited feedback on all mega issues during my tenure as a delegate. I routinely spoke at our district & state meetings, always sharing the information from AND. I developed a list of members that would be qualified as experts in their subject matters & would draw upon their expertise whenever needed. During HOD meetings, I represented my state's positions but would maintain an open mind during our sessions and was willing to change if new information became available.
Legislative and Public Policy Committee | AND | - | In this role I engaged members in supporting grassroots advocacy requests. I headed the national task force on Food Labeling. I served on the food security task force. I represented Healthy Aging members with Older American Act Reauthorization efforts. I participated in the public policy workshops, serving as a moderator for several sessions. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
Since I was in Junior High School, I have been passionate about nutrition and good food. I am proud to call myself a "foodie". I went to law school to combine my two passions. I wanted to be the person who could help develop better laws for safer and healthier foods. I want more RDN's and dietetic practitioners saturating the media with science-based nutrition information. Enhanced reimbursement for our services is essential and my regulatory legal background should be an asset.
Campaign Statement
I truly feel we are the profession that can positively change the health of our nation. Improvements are happening but we need to be leading the nutrition pack! Dianne Polly doesn't want a cracker she wants your VOTE.
