Delegate-at-Large, Members 30 and Under | Academy House of Delegates (HOD) | - | As the representative of the Academy's younger members, I used creativity and consistency to reach out to members. I communicated weekly messages from the House of Delegates to members across the country using social media, affiliate newsletters and the Thirty and Under (TUND) Member Interest Group (MIG) communications platform. The lack of face-to-face communication made it difficult to assess how effective my communications were. I realized success at our first House of Delegates Meeting. I had used a survey to gather member feedback for the Mega Issue being discussed; collecting over 20 responses. To me, this did not seem like a significant number; but after collaborating with other Affiliate and DGP Delegates, who were shocked and impressed by the amount of feedback I had received, I realized my efforts were paying off! Adequate member feedback allowed me to effectively represent those I was a 'delegate' of, and to be an active participant during the House meeting.
Member, Council on Future Practice | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) | - | Being a member of the Council on Future Practice has opened my eyes to how the Academy and its segments work together to provide a future-focused outlook for the profession and its membership. I was a member of the Work Group charged with completing the document 'A Future-Focused Vision for a New Model of Differentiated Entry-Level Nutrition and Dietetics Practice'. Collaborating with other work group members to learn the history and purpose of the Council's Visioning Report allowed me to actively participate in this work group with a fresh perspective and outlook. Working diligently under a strict deadline, the work group was able to submit a finalized document.
Nominating Committee Chair | Broward County Dietetic Assocation (BCDA) | - | I was personally responsible for attending all member and Board of Director meetings to encourage the membership to provide nominations for all ballot positions and awards. During the year I provided members with multiple venues (face to face, written, email, website, Facebook, phone call) to bring forth their nominations. Once nominations and supporting materials were collected, I spearheaded a committee to create the ballot and select award recipients. Once the member ballot was open for voting, I encouraged and drove member voting with a phone drive to each member, resulting in one of BCDA's highest member outcome vote. I also created a backlog of elected positions and award recipients, as this had not been done in the past, to prevent repetition and to encourage diversity among future positions.
Restaurant Menu Labeling Work Group | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (then ADA) | - | I was asked to participate in this Work Group, along with other Academy (then ADA) members. I participated on conference calls where it was decided how this Work Group would go about creating and providing information to the Academy membership on all the changes within restaurant menu labeling. I was paired up with another member to develop and create one of the online training modules that members would receive continuing education credit for viewing. Coordination through email and phone conversations, proficiency with PowerPoint, along with varied knowledge and resources on the topic of member implementation and messaging to consumers assured that tasks were completed on time. The 'Online Certificate of Training Program in Restaurant Menu Labeling' was available for member viewing and training in the spring of 2011.
Chair | Academy Legislative & Public Policy Committee (LPPC) | - | The last year of my three-year term on the Legislative and Public Policy Committee was spent as Chairperson of this committee. My regular responsibilities included running conference calls (these sanctioned as our monthly meetings, with two face-to-face meetings per calendar year), gathering and brainstorming input from all committee members, streamlining discussion topics, and reaching action outcomes to move agenda topics forward from discussion to action and finally implementation. I was part of a sub-group tasked with restructuring the Award in Grassroots Excellence to increase criteria for affiliate involvement and mentoring, leading to a more comprehensive award application and ultimately more well-rounded award recipients. I helped organize and run ADA's first virtual Public Policy Workshop, reaching more members and students than ever before and staying within budget for the year. I presented at the HOD Fall meeting on ADA's Health Reform efforts, resulting in greater Delegate and member collaboration and feedback. I assisted with member meetings at FNCE, further building the relationship and communications between states and the LPPC, as the LPPC is a member driven committee. These FNCE meetings assisted in my work as a member of the LPPC Grassroots Task Force, resulting in more streamlined grassroots structure for reaching members and disseminating advocacy training. I also served as a member of ADA's Policy Work Group, which was charged with moving forward after a serious staffing change, affecting remaining staff and the LPPC. Member surveys and phone interviews were implemented and reviewed to improve ADA's policy efforts as well as internal and external communications. My final initiative as LPPC Chair was to create an LPPC Member Handbook (to date one had not been created) to provide committee members with more concrete job descriptions and to allow the committee to run more efficiently and effectively, moving forward as ADA's voice for public policy. |
