HOUSE OF DELEGATES LEADERSHIP TEAM | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | As a passionate HLT leader, I have advocated for member issues and worked as a team employing knowledge based strategic governance and delegate participation to, govern the profession, approve policies on major professional issues and keep members informed. I excel at drawing out the best in others and encouraging everyone to fulfill his or her potential. I am confident in my leadership, interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills and embrace challenges, with the knowledge that member input, core HOD values, and the strategic plan will guide us toward our vision. I have participated in identification and prioritization of mega issues, reviewed bylaws and governance documents, assessed and recommended changes to information systems, participated in facilitation design for both virtual and live HOD meetings, trained new delegates and table facilitators, and discussed and resolved member issues in a timely fashion. I helped plan a fun HOD skit to raise awareness about representative of vs. for, which ended up raising money for ANDF. I value the HLT/HOD camaraderie & dedication to the profession and feel I can continue to bring optimism, enthusiasm and increased member engagement to the work of the HOD.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | As a BOD member, I have utilized my broad knowledge of the profession, my entrepreneurial spirit and my leadership experiences to collaborate with BOD members, the executive team, committees, and organizational units to set direction for the organization. I feel I have demonstrated insight, confidence, integrity and creativity in my communications and the ability to embrace change and think strategically and globally. I have participated in the Academy’s name and new credential change, future practice decisions, technology and website revisions, budget and dues processes, diversity and mentoring planning, review of the practice based research network and ANDII, and evaluation of corporate sponsorship policies. I support the ANDF and AND PAC annually. My experiences on the Diversity and Evidence Based Practice committees have been enriching, and I have been so impressed with the incredible work done by all committee members and staff. As an EBPC member, I participated in the review processes for the Vegetarian Nutrition practice guidelines, the Disorders of Lipid Metabolism Update practice guidelines, and the Celiac Disease and Heart Failure toolkits. I also evaluated new practice guidelines topics and helped plan a member questionnaire regarding use and knowledge of the EAL.
DIVERSITY COMMITTEE | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | As the HLT liaison to the Diversity Committee, I have come to understand that even with all the work that the Academy continues to do related to diversity and culture competence, there is still much more work to be done. Our Diversity Leader program only produces 4 graduates a year, and the issue with increasing diverse students may be a problem with getting those who are already enrolled in programs to completion. Diverse members must be welcome and engaged in all Academy activities and continue to see the value of their membership. I live in a culturally diverse city and precept for 4 DIs, which focus on recruiting diverse underserved students in South TX. I currently serve as an Academy e-mentor to 8 mentees and 1 of our new diversity leaders and am encouraging 2 dietitians in San Antonio to apply for the Diversity Leader program. I requested the addition of a diversity discussion at the spring 2013 BOD meeting, where I presented a diversity update to raise awareness. I have participated in diversity committee strategic planning, diversity leader selection, FNCE Culture Symposium topic selection, and mentoring of our diversity committee members.

PRECEPTOR, MEDIA EXPERT & PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION ADVOCATE | CBS KENS 5 TV, TX KLRN, City of San Antonio | - | Students are our future and I believe we all have a responsibility to support their education and training. As a DI preceptor to multiple internship programs throughout my career, I expose my students to real life dietetics practice, introduce them to the HOD and strongly encouraged lifelong Academy volunteerism & membership. I currently serve on 2 internship advisory committees and have participated in new internship planning and ACEND site visits. I try to empower my students to recognize and embrace their own unique skills, take advantage of Academy programs and services, be confident, and take the risk necessary to move forward toward their goals. My reward for this service deepens my passion for the profession and makes me proud to be an RDN! As a media expert for 16 years, I promote my business, the Academy & its members, and science based nutrition through multiple nutrition segments on TV, radio and in print. One exciting program I presented for KLRN TV was on hunger and obesity in San Antonio. My most recent TV segments are linked to my Pinterest page, and I actively communicate and blog on social media. My PH nutrition advocacy includes volunteering for child abuse prevention and confidence building initiatives and multiple committees that grew out of the “Por Vida” healthy restaurant initiative, where I was a founding member and leader in recruiting RDs to develop healthy menu criteria and work with restaurants to analyze recipes. I also collaborated with RDs and vending companies to develop healthy vending criteria for the city. As an appointed member of the Mayor’s Fitness Council for the past four years, I helped develop the nutrition portion of our new city health and fitness website “FitCitySA.com” where we have RD cooking videos, Academy tips, recipes and links. I have spoken at our Food Bank to train volunteers and tirelessly advocate to ensure nutrition and RDs/DTRs are top of mind when planning community health and fitness programming. |
