Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
Member, Advocacy and Public Policy Committee | California Dietetic Association, Los Angeles District (CDA/LAD) | - | As Legislative Ambassador of CDA/LAD I contributed in the movement towards licensure for dietitians in the state of California. As the Advocacy and Public Policy committee of LAD, we championed to reduce the obesity epidemic by supporting the removal of flavored milk from public schools and partnering with schools and local government to advocate for increased access to free drinking water to school children. I also advertised and promoted the 2010 Dietary Guidelines of the USDA.
Contributing Author, Pediatric Nutrition Care Manual – Normal Nutrition for the School-Aged Children | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | As a student and as an entry-level dietitian, I always admired my professors, my preceptors, and clinical instructors for their knowledge and expertise. I resolved then to do the same for dietitians when I assumed a leadership position. As a contributing author for the AND’s Pediatric Nutrition Care Manual, I was able to share evidence-based practice and knowledge and give guidance to the nutrition practitioners who provide care for children.
Self-Assessment Committee Member | American Society for Parenteral Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) | - | From 2010 to 2013, I was a member of the inter-professional Self-Assessment committee of ASPEN. Immediately, committee leaders recognized my depth and breadth of pediatric nutrition support and tasked me with revising the study reference guide and the pediatric module of ASPEN’s Self-Assessment Program for the Certified Nutrition Support Clinician Examination. This was a collaborative endeavor that ultimately taught me the importance of advocating for the specialty skills sets.
Participant, Advanced Practice Examination Development and Item-writing Meetings | Commission on Dietetic Registration | - | As an Advanced Practice Examination committee member, I collaborated with other registered dietitians who met the advanced practitioner criteria, as defined by AND. I contributed to the identification of the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) of the future advanced level practitioner and wrote items for the exam to reflect these required KSAs. The final stages of this exam are ongoing, but having had the opportunity to serve and help shape the future of the profession was truly an honor. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
