MAYOR'S FITNESS COUNCIL & POR VIDA HEALTHY RESTAURANT PARTNER | City of San Antonio, Mayor Julian Castro | - | As the first RDN in San Antonio to be appointed to the Mayor’s Fitness Council, I partnered with business leaders & public health officials to address health disparities in our city. The “Por Vida” healthy restaurant initiative was a program I helped develop. I recruited RDNs to help me analyze restaurant recipes & develop healthy vending criteria. As a result of our efforts, “Por Vida” received national recognition from the CDC & Mrs. Obama and 2 RDN jobs were added to the MetroHealth office.
TEXAS AFFILIATE PRESIDENT | Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | I demonstrated leadership & communication skills by networking with our lobbyist, legislators & members to successfully fight off opponents & reauthorize the TX LD law. I built a strong relationship with the WM DPG by creating the first co-sponsored Affiliate/DPG FNCE. I nurtured our students by arranging for them to hold their annual meeting every year at TX FNCE.
DIVERSITY, QUALITY MANAGEMENT & EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE COMMITTEES | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | The immense commitment and body of work that our Academy committees produce is amazing. Even with all the progress related to diversity and culture competence, quality standards, outcomes research and evidence analysis there is still more work to be done, including communication improvements between units. I value the synergy of teamwork, participate actively, ask questions and offer suggestions when I see possibilities. I look for the best in others and focus on each person’s unique qualities.
TEXAS MEDIA REP & DELEGATE | Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | As a two-term delegate, I collaborated with my team of affiliate delegates to make district presentations motivational, fun & interactive. We facilitated communications by creating competitive games with prizes, mini “House” round table discussions, and karaoke skits that encouraged member’s input. We implemented the use of Skype conferencing to stream delegate presentations to under-represented rural districts. I actively participated as a HOD table facilitator, scribe & new delegate mentor. |
