Delegate | Tennessee Academy of Nutirtion and Dietetics | - | I read once that if you're leading well, you won't have just one leadership style. I believe I have been effective in employing different styles for different situations. As a delegate I have tried to be the voice of TN dietitians. I have utilized different communication strategies to both request input and to provide updates on issues being discussed at the HOD. I have been called a transformational & visionary leader. I use my training as a certified mediator to help people reach consensus.
President | Tennessee Dietetic Association (now TN Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) | - | A TN peer recently described my leadership profile as a servant leader with emotional intelligence. She said leaders with high emotional intelligence are able to engage with people in a way that draws them in. I encourage people to contribute whatever they bring to the table. I want to make a difference and I love seeing positive results. As President of TDA, I worked to establish sound business practices and to strengthen and maintain the integrity of our organization.
Legislative and Public Policy Committee | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | As a member of the LPPC, I worked to motivate and encourage active participation in the political process. I have spoken at national, state, and district meetings on the importance of getting involved. I personally have developed strong positive relationships with local, state and national legislative leaders that have resulted in dietitians being recognized as the leaders in nutrition and hunger. I chaired the food labeling task force and worked on the hunger and food insecurity task force.
Chairman Ethics Committee | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | Serving on the Ethics Committee was one of the highlights of my professional career. I believe that the integrity and high ethical standards of our Academy is what sets us apart from other practitioners. Our Code of Ethics is well written and easy to apply. I have regularly spoken and written on professional ethics at national and state meetings. I worked with the other committee members and attorney to fairly rule on ethical complaints.
Chairman | Community Legal Center of Memphis | - | Leading a group of attorneys can be challenging. I was able to work with fifteen board members to organize several hundred attorneys providing pro bono services to the working poor in our community. We raised adequate funding to support additional staffing and launched a successful public awareness campaign highlighting our services. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
