Chair, Public Health Nutrition Taskforces | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | These two taskforces (HOD and BOD) have developed frameworks to increase the Academy's focus on public health nutrition and to provide strategies for members to move into public health practice.
President | Association of State and Territorial Public Health Nutrition Directors | - | Served two terms as President of the ASTPHND. Worked with the ASTPHND BOD to change the organization's structure. We were contracting with another organization for administrative support which was inadequate. In the new structure, we contracted with two consultants - one to provide administrative services and another for fiscal operations. The Association has continued with this structure for 15 years. Initiated yearly meetings with the Association's granting agencies and a feasibility study to examine the establishment of a MCH Council. Represented the Association on an expert panel for the CDC Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity designed to provide input into the Division's priorities.
Director-at-Large | American Dietetic Association | - | Served as chair of the Member Value Committee. The purpose of the committee was to assure that the Association adequately represented the members' needs. As a result of this committee's deliberations, the Member Service Center was established to serve as a "one-stop-shopping" response to member and consumer inquiries and the ADA Careerlink was created for on-line job listings. A review of the membership categories was also completed, which led to consolidation and the development of an international classification.
Secretary/Treasurer | American Dietetic Association | - | Initiated fundamental changes in the role of the Finance Committee, transitioning it from a narrow financial management focus to a broad, more appropriate role of financial oversight. Established training for the committee members on their roles and responsibilities, evaluated ADA's insurance coverage (which was a new process) and instituted the "dash-board" format for financial reporting. Also, served on the Strategic Plan Steering Committee and the Governance Taskforce and Transition teams. Both of these committees helped position ADA to move into the 21st century.
Public Health/Community Nutrition Practice Group Delegate | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | Represents the Public Health/Community Nutrition Practice Group in the HOD. Presented at the fall 2012 HOD meeting on "Public Health it is Everyone’s Business". Serve as table facilitator and mentor. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
Campaign Statement
The Academy is facing many challenges ranging from changing dietetic education to positioning us as a key player in the Affordable Care Act. I am futuristic, a change agent and risk-taker, which are skills that can help position the profession for the future.
