House of Delegates (HOD) Speaker-elect |
|
HOD Speaker is a position which allows me to work directly with members and begin the process of leading all of us into our next 100 years. My previous service in the HOD for over 10 years, as president in 2 different affiliates and as a past Academy Treasurer gives me the skills and interest in member issues needed for this position. I would like to see the House develop into a more "involved" body, perhaps with a bit more time for actual debate of issues to be certain to hear all voices. |
Employer | Title | Years Employed |
Barnes Hospital | Director of Food and Nutrition | 1971-1978 |
New York State Office of Mental Health | Director of Nutrition Services | 1978-1998 |
Morrison | Director of Patient Satisfaction & Consultant | 1998 to present |
Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
Foundation Chair | Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics | - | Chair of the Academy Foundation is the essence of practicing leadership style, because it requires enthusiasm, inspiration, and organizational skills, all of which I was able to apply. My contribution was to be sure our meetings were well run and that all opinions were heard. My goal for the year was to inspire individual members to see the importance of contributing to the Foundation and I worked very hard to communicate this message.
Board of Directors | ANDPAC | - | Service on the Academy PAC BOD requires the ability to speak out on issues with an “open mind” and the ability to communicate with legislators and their staffs regarding Academy issues and I particularly enjoyed this. My contribution, again, was to communicate to members that a PAC is a necessary and vital entity for the Academy if we are to accomplish our legislative goals. I worked hard to communicate this as well as try to inspire individual contributions.

Member, Future Practice & Ed. Task Force II | Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics | - | Serving on this very important Task Force caused me to utilize every leadership skill I value—listening, learning about every aspect of the Academy & dietetic practice, communicating controversial issues with members, understanding member needs, and valuing the work of others. I believe those skills were also a major contribution I made throughout our deliberations. Most importantly, I am still using this work as I have moved into other areas of Academy work and corporate work.
Professional Issues Delegate | Academy HOD | - | As the Professional Issues Delegate for Management, listening skills were important, both during deliberations and when communicating back with DPG members. Of course, it was also essential to translate these messages clearly & concisely to both groups. While I felt I made a contribution in this role, I also felt that this position had “served its purpose” and tried to use my time in this position to push for direct DPG representation in the HOD, which did become a reality shortly thereafter. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
Campaign Statement
Dietetics has allowed me to be an educator, a clinician, a manager, and a leader in every job I have had. Academy volunteering has been a way for me to learn from amazing colleagues and contribute to the profession. My only “agenda” is to ensure the successful future of dietetic practice.
