Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
Speaker HOD (Elect, Speaker, Past Speaker) | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | 2016 - 2019 | After having served as a delegate from TN for 12 years, I acquired experience with identifying and addressing many issues impacting the profession. I believe delegates should be the voice of our members, but, I felt frustration with the functioning of the House. It was under my leadership that I led the House Leadership Team to begin to tackle the difficult task of reviewing our processes and proposing changes to make the HOD stronger and determine how the HOD could best support our new strategic plan.
Chair and member Ethics Committee | American Dietetic Association (now Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) | 2008 - 2011 | We developed several ethics case studies for members to use during my tenure on the committee. I worked on a video panel that was prepared for members to better understand the new Code of Ethics. I presented at two national FNCE meetings on the topic of ethics and our profession during this period. I strongly argued for the inclusion of ethics hours for all members in their professional portfolio. I continue to present on the topic of ethics in our profession at affiliate & DPG meetings.
Past President and Board Member | TN Dietetic Association (now TN Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) | 2005 - 2019 | During my tenure as the Past President and board member of TDA, we worked on developing a new strategic plan for our state. Prior to this, each year the new President would start their year with developing their own agenda and goals. With one other colleague, we translated member feedback into a stepwise progression of goals with measurable performance standards. My board was the most diverse board at the state level ever.
Foundation Board President | Kiwanis District LAMSWestTN | 2016 - 2019 | As an active Kiwanian, I have served as President of the downtown Memphis club, Lieutenant Governor and President of the Foundation for the district of Louisiana, Mississippi and West TN Kiwanis. I led the club’s major fundraiser for the International Eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus program. I developed a reading program for several inner-city schools and gave the children the books after we read to the students. I served as the regional Foundation board President establishing policies for administering grants.
Delegate TN | TN Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | 2005 - 2016 | I developed many surveys and solicited feedback on all mega issues during my tenure as a delegate. I spoke at our district and state meetings always sharing the information I acquired from the national Academy. I had VIP's (Very important People) giving me input that served as experts in their chosen fields. During the HOD meetings, I represented my state's ideas, but also maintained an open mind during the session and was willing to change as new information was available. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
Opportunities for our profession is limited only by our inability to think creatively & outside the box. Our profession is “ hot” & we need to use that to our advantage & improve the health of our country. (Nutrigenomics, primary health providers, robotics, community cooking labs, food technology industries are just a few of the areas where we should be.) I want to be the person who helps develop & advocates for better laws for safer and healthier foods. I want everyone to have access to an RDN
Campaign Statement
Our profession can improve the health of our nation. Education is crucial and we need to be leading the nutrition pack! Polly doesn't want an overly processed corn cracker, she wants your whole grain VOTE.
