Leadership Experience
| Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: |
| Nominating Committee Chair | Broward County Dietetic Association (BCDA) | - | I was personally responsible for attending all member and Board of Director meetings to encourage the membership to provide nominations for all ballot positions and awards. During the year I provided members with multiple venues (face to face, written, email, website, Facebook, phone call) to bring forth their nominations. Once nominations and supporting materials were collected, I spearheaded a committee to create the ballot and select award recipients. Once the member ballot was open for voting, I encouraged and drove member voting with a phone drive to each member, resulting in one of BCDA's highest member outcome vote. I also created a backlog of elected positions and award recipients, as this had not been done in the past, to prevent repetition and to encourage diversity among future positions. |
| Historian | Broward County Dietetic Association (BCDA) | - | My main task was to document all member and association involvement at member meetings, in the media, or within the community (events or workplace). I was responsible for creating and submitting a National Nutrition Month Yearbook to the Florida Dietetic Association (FDA), showing our district's yearlong efforts to promote the RD and DTR within the community. This submitted Yearbook won BCDA the distinction of 'Best District' within FDA. As a BCDA Board Member, I also assisted the Legislative Chair with gathering member input for the House of Delegates (HOD) Dialogue Session on Health Reform. While attending this HOD session, I shared information during round table discussions from members in our district. |
| Work Group Member | ADA, Restaurant Menu Labeling Work Group | - | I was asked to participate in this Work Group, along with other ADA members. I participated on conference calls where it was decided how this Work Group would go about creating and providing information to the ADA membership on all the changes within restaurant menu labeling. I was paired up with another member to develop and create one of the online training modules that members would receive continuing education credit for viewing. Coordination through email and phone conversations, proficiency with PowerPoint, along with varied knowledge and resources on the topic of member implementation and messaging to consumers assured that tasks were completed on time. The 'Online Certificate of Training Program in Restaurant Menu Labeling' was available for member viewing and training in the spring of 2011. |
| Chair | ADA, Legislative & Public Policy Committee (LPPC) | - | The last year of my three-year term on the Legislative and Public Policy Committee was spent as Chairperson of this committee. My regular responsibilities included running conference calls (these sanctioned as our monthly meetings, with two face-to-face meetings per calendar year), gathering and brainstorming input from all committee members, streamlining discussion topics, and reaching action outcomes to move agenda topics forward from discussion to action and finally implementation. I was part of a sub-group tasked with restructuring the Award in Grassroots Excellence to increase criteria for affiliate involvement and mentoring, leading to a more comprehensive award application and ultimately more well-rounded award recipients. I helped organize and run ADA's first virtual Public Policy Workshop, reaching more members and students than ever before and staying within budget for the year. I presented at the HOD Fall meeting on ADA's Health Reform efforts, resulting in greater Delegate and member collaboration and feedback. I assisted with member meetings at FNCE, further building the relationship and communications between states and the LPPC, as the LPPC is a member driven committee. These FNCE meetings assisted in my work as a member of the LPPC Grassroots Task Force, resulting in more streamlined grassroots structure for reaching members and disseminating advocacy training. I also served as a member of ADA's Policy Work Group, which was charged with moving forward after a serious staffing change, affecting remaining staff and the LPPC. Member surveys and phone interviews were implemented and reviewed to improve ADA's policy efforts as well as internal and external communications. My final initiative as LPPC Chair was to create an LPPC Member Handbook (to date one had not been created) to provide committee members with more concrete job descriptions and to allow the committee to run more efficiently and effectively, moving forward as ADA's voice for public policy. |
| Chair | ADA, Restaurant Nutrition Labeling Research Task Force | - | As a member of the Legislative and Public Policy Committee I was asked to Chair this Task Force. I ran conference calls with Task Force members, gathered input from all members to formulate a consensus on research available at the time on restaurant nutrition labeling. Research review and conference calls led to assignment and revision of ADA's stance on Restaurant Nutrition Labeling. I assisted ADA Washington D.C. staffers in providing ADA's Board of Directors with a full Task Force document, including final recommendations and revised stance messaging. In part, to my organizing and facilitating, the Task Force met the HOD deadline with providing this information. |
