Leadership Experience
| Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: |
| Speaker, House of Delegates | American Dietetic Association | - | As Speaker, I promoted the value of shared leadership among the House Leadership Team (HLT). A team approach for working collaboratively was my leadership style. As the HLT led in the governance of our profession, mega issues (MI) of Health Reform, Management & Leadership Across Practice, and Marketplace Relevance were debated and Associate Category and MIs impacting the future of our profession were discussed. Approved motions were forwarded for action and implementation. In support of the HOD/HLT Goals, MI Champions monitored past issues of HOD (diversity, nutritional genomics, more) and member awareness/participation at the local, state, and national levels were called for. Member feedback was solicited for the Career Path Guide and definitions of specialist/advanced practice were shared with constituents. To enhance communication, training sessions and webinars were conducted (New Delegate Orientation, Table Facilitator Training, Competitive Analysis, more), and backgrounders, verbal updates and reports (Alternative Supervised Practice, Finance, Education, ADAF, ADAPAC, more) were provided so delegates could represent their constituents effectively using the Knowledge-Based Strategic Governance process. DPG delegates continued to be added to HOD and will be completed by 06/12. All delegates were invited to the 2011 Public Policy Workshop in DC, asked to engage in Action Alerts (Child Nutrition Act, Health Reform, more) and work collaboratively with state Public Policy Coordinators. As Speaker, I served on the Legislative and Public Policy Committee (ex-officio), and had the privilege of identifying leaders to serve on HOD and HOD/BOD committees (Diversity, APC, QM, Council on Future Practice, Professional Development, Research, Nutrition Informatics, more). Most challenging: Many young professionals want to serve as emerging leaders, yet opportunities are limited. In 2011, an e-mentoring program for young leaders was implemented. |
| Board of Directors | American Dietetic Association | - | As a member of the Board of Directors providing governance of the organization, a duty of care, fiduciary responsibility, loyalty, and responsibility to safeguard the organizations assets were my focus of service. As my duty of care, I participated in the strategic planning process in support of the mission, vision, and values of our association. Though numerous issues have been addressed by the BOD, none more significant to me than the Competitive Analysis of Dietetic Services Market which compelled us to action and called for a name change - one that included a term that is searched and recognized: nutrition. With great feedback from our membership, steps were taken to embrace a historical name change. In addition to the strategic planning process and addressing significant issues, as a BOD and Speaker, I served as a member of the Finance and Audit Committee during the challenging economic downturn. Steps were taken to safeguard our organizations assets and budgets were adjusted to assure safety. In addition, strategic Think Tank Proposals were considered and approved for implementation so low-hanging "financial fruit" could provide new sources of revenue. Finally, in loyalty to our current and next generation of members and leaders, I participated in the Future Connections Summit on Dietetics Practice, Credentialing and Education which provided a forum to explore a future vision for educating, developing and advancing the profession of dietetics, as well as the Leadership Institutes (2009, 2010, 2011). |
| Quality Management Committee | American Dietetic Association | - | As a member of the Quality Management Committee (QMC), the Standards of Practice (SOP) in Nutrition Care for the Registered Dietitian (RD) and the Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) and the Standards of Professional Performance (SOPP) for the RD and DTR were revised, taking in to account federal regulatory language. The revision originated with a motion of the ADA Board of Directors as some facilities employing members had received citations from federal surveyors and state department of health surveyors. Wanting to engage the DTRs in this change process, I helped facilitate several "listening calls" with the Dietetic Technicians in Practice DPG executive committee where various regulatory issues related to the revisions were openly discussed and addressed. The essential changes between the 2005 and 2008 SOP/SOPP emphasized the importance of compliance with regulatory standards, the definition of supervision, and the clear delineation between the RD and DTR standards of practices. The QMC team and staff drafted a "Frequently Asked Questions" document, provided a table of "Key Differences from 2005 to 2008 in the SOP/SOPP," and conducted a delegate training session highlighting DTR scenarios in the workplace. The revisions were approved by the House of Delegates and QMC published the final SOP/SOPP in the Journal September 2008. I served as the Vice-Chairperson for the Quality Management Committee 2008-2009. |
| Delegate, House of Delegates | Arizona and American Dietetic Associations | - | I was elected and served as the affiliate delegate for Arizona (two-terms/6 years) and as a Professional Issues Delegate - Education (one-term/3 years), a time before Knowledge-Based Strategic Governance was implemented in the House of Delegates. The final year as the PID Education delegate, I was invited to serve on the Quality Management Committee as the liaison to the HOD. Much has changed since then and the PID delegates are being phased out and DPG delegates are being phased in. During my tenure as a delegate, the Future Search Conference: Challenging the Future of Dietetic Education and Credentialing brought challenging dialogue. Key suggestions from the meeting were grappled with and included promotion of the use of hi-tech communication, developing new practice roles for RDs and DTRs, and expanding skills through cross training with other health professionals. In addition, the role of the Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) was hotly debated and discussed, as reports from workgroups and taskforces revealed their findings. Through the work of the House, the role of the DTR as a valued member of the nutrition team was further recognized and embraced. |
| President | Arizona Dietetic Association | - | During my tenure serving as President for the Arizona Dietetic Association, three key leadership activities took place: 1) AzDA enjoyed near record profits from its annual meeting at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson where Covert Bailey, author of Fit or Fat, entertained members of the state association as well as the public with his lively presentation. 2) The First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton was invited as the keynote speaker to address Health Reform and discuss the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). Though unable to attend, it is interesting to look back now at the time and the topic. 3) I attended the 1994 Future Search Conference: Challenging the Future of Dietetic Education and Credentialing, sponsored by the American Dietetic Association. Key suggestions from the meeting included promotion the use of hi-tech communication, developing new practice roles for RDs and DTRs, and expanding skills through cross training with other health professionals. In addition to my service as President, other leadership opportunities and volunteer activities included serving on the AzDA Executive Committee, the AzDA Annual Meeting Committee, and Chair of the Legislative and Public Policy Committee. In addition, I served as the Central Arizona Dietetic Association President, and the Chair for the CADDA Legislative and Public Policy Committee. In addition, I served two terms (6 years) as the Affiliate Delegate for the State of Arizona. |
