Member, Scientific Review Committees | National Institutes of Health | - | Invited to join 3 standing Review Committees of the NIH, including Behavioral Medicine, Epidemiology and Disease Control and Health Context and Behavior. As the only RD on the panel, I needed to discuss applications to identify and evaluate the nutrition components. I educated the panel and applicants for future funding by recommending nutrition integration where lacking and methods for proper implementation and evaluation. As grants were interdisiciplinary and the RD was often excluded, I played a major role in enhancing the role of RDs as part of the research team and identifying components of the grant where dietitians were the best qualified to provide the services. Dietitians were often recommended before funding was to be granted and the role of dietitians were recognized, supported and enhanced. | |
Delegate at Large, Nominating Committee, Board of Directors | Society of Behavioral Medicine | - | The Society was encouraged to include dietitian/nutritionist as part of their membership. This component of the Society was targeted and RDs were identified and recognized as a major sub-group. The training and role of the RDs were recognized to enhance research efforts for investigators and clinical outcomes for patients. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
I am most excited about the future role and unique contributions that can be made by dietitians in all aspects of the health care field. New challenges and opportunities are evident and the role of the dietitian can be enhanced. Dietitians need to be prepared, supported and encouraged to be entrepreneurs and pro-active leaders. The AND can provide the organizational leadership to create and support new pathways to guide and assure success.
