Leadership skills in strategic planning, collaborative service, management and budgeting are evident in increasing roles through both national volunteer (30 yrs.) and administrative roles at The University of Alabama. Since 2005 I have served as Dir. of the Dept. of Health Promotion & Wellness of the Student Health Center (SHC) and its growth is evident in personnel (2.0 – 8.5FTE), a direct result of administrative support. As the Exec. Dir. of the SHC since 2012, I manage a diverse staff (56FTE) and a budget of $9.5M, providing 40K clinic visits and over 47K outreach encounters with UA students annually. I lead by example, while delegating to empower others. |

BOD Director at Large | Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics | - | I have served in two specific roles as a Director at Large for the BOD. From 2012 -2014 I was honored to serve as the BOD liaison to Nutrition Care Process-Standardized Language, contributing to the discussions on marketing to stakeholders for a greater understanding and adoption of the NCP. In addition, critical decisions are made about language for the NCP that position the Academy both nationally and internationally in the dietetics world. The intense work of this commitee is outstanding and the opportunity to contribute to their deliberations was a distinct honor. The 3rd year of my term the President Elect asked me to move to be the liaison to NDEP Board. My first role there was to Chair a Task Force regarding the NDA (Nutrition Dietetic Associate) designation and member input. Countless feedback and historical documentation over the past 3 years were reviewed thoroughly by the Task Force and recommendations submitted to the Board; all recommendations were adopted by the Board. The leadership style that reflects my practice is one of collaboration, active listening, respect for differences and empowering others, and authenic conversations. It is important to me that I strive to reflect or mirror the values and mission of the organization for which I am serving in a leadership role, whether it is my professional work and professional volunteer roles.
Coding & Coverage Committee, Chair | Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics | - | As a member and then as Chair of CCC, we explored ways to enhance greater use of the MNT CPT Codes, provide member education surrounding the critical issues to practice, CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid) and other payors and diligently pursue ways to make an impact with our internal and external partners. Cooperative relationships for advocacy with LPPC, ANDPAC, educators and our practitioners was consistently a top priority. A huge project we initiated was to develop webinars targeting member education to enhance advocacy for 3rd party coverage for RDNs with employers that are self-insured and how to approach HR representatives who are often the door keepers to change. The leadership style that reflects my advocacy is one of passion and enthusiasm grounded in our goals and objectives, empowering others to lead based on their belief in the greater good for the profession that these initiatives for practice embody now and for the future.
ANDPAC (then ADAPAC) | Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics | - | We set ambitious goals for member involvement and advocacy. At FNCE and the Public Policy Workshop an aggressive campaign was instituted to engage members and pro-spective members (our student dietetic organizations) in knowing our target advocacy concerns and making a contribution. We raised over $600,000 dollars for the PAC and in cooperation with LPPC we initiated the recognition of dietetic education programs which had projects promoting legislative issues at either the local, state or national levels and showcased them at FNCE; this was to encourage greater exposure to the impact of legislation on our professional access and impact on the lives of the public we serve. The leadership ship style that reflects my passion in this role is a dedication to inclusiveness; we needed all members and students committed and becoming more engaged, those in clinical / community practice as well as those who are not, because it affects the profession as a whole and our practices across all the dimensions of practice.
Strategic Planning Task Force | Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics | - | Appointed by then ADA President to this Task Force as a member, I was honored, humbled and excited. The experience of working with those talented and committed members and our public member exceeded my expectations and challenged each of us to think critically and globally for the profession. The group of varied leaders were charged with making recommendations to the BOD for changes to ADA's mission, vision, values and the strategic plan. We were challenged and intensively studied the trends, brutal facts, opportunities and challenges. My leadership style in this effort was collaborative deliberations, respect for diverse perspectives, and projecting a commitment to open-mindedness.
Chair , Higher Education Partnership | Higher Education Partnership of Alabama | - | As Chair of the Higher Education Partnership (HEP, including 14 statewide public universities), I provided leadership to our advocacy efforts on the individual campuses through our faculty /staff organizations, Student Government Organizations and Alumni members. Threats to public university funding were high and have continued. The HEP was very young, having been started by University Presidents in 1998. I began summarizing non-partisan legislative issues with the HEP Staff and our Government Relations Staff that were sent to all faculty senates across the state. We trained faculty/staff and students in advocacy, and the Partnership ( which I have continued to serve on their Board to the present time) has an annual retreat to address the current issues that invoves approximately 140 representatives from the member universities. I have recently engaged our Public Relations Department in providing real life experience to their Campaigns Class as a project for the HEP. Their work will create real stories of higher education's impact on the state to share with legislators from every district in Alabama; student service learning touches the state in tangible ways that impact quality of life and also has economic impact and we plan to show that. In this way higher education continues to demonstrate the fact that it is a tremendous asset to the state and is deserving of financial support, so that the cost of higher education is more affordable to all who qualify. My leadership style in this role is one innovation, creativity, and collaboration that leads to more individuals and groups working for the wellbeing of our state and our educational system from K-PhD. |
