Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
Editor-in-Chief, The Digest | Research DPG, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | I effectively manage, coordinate, direct and am responsible for a team of volunteers and authors for the quarterly publication of a peer-reviewed publication of the Research DPG. Since I began I have completely re-designed the management strategy, and timeline which has resulted in an on-time publication with higher quality content (e.g. Dr. Norm Hord, an expert in nitrates/nitrites, recently published in our journal). I have also effectively negotiated to increase the budget for The Digest (more than double the allowable costs in previous years) and changed the presentation to our membership to improve the professional appearance of our publication. In this capacity I have also had experience dealing with outside sponsors (e.g. Beef Checkoff), contractors, the Research DPG leadership team and have conducted public speaking on The Digest's behalf. In my current tenure, I have produced 6 editions of The Digest.
Secretary | Student Interest Group, American Society for Nutrition | - | I currently am currently working as part of the leadership team for Experimental Biology 2014's Student Interest group's symposium, member breakfast, mentoring event, awards competition and poster session.
Secretary | Future Researchers Stimulating Healthy Lifestyles, The University of Arizona | - | I organized multiple fund raising events and community education events (ex. Tucson Meet Yourself, Relay for Life in Tucson, Tucson's Iron Chef Convention) for graduate students at The University of Arizona.
First author | Oncology DPG, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | - | I served as first author of the chapter on nutrition in cancer survivorship in the Oncology Nutrition for Clinical Practice reference book that was recently published by the Oncology DPG. As first author I reviewed, analyzed and wrote the majority of the chapter. This reference book serves as the basis for medical nutrition therapy decisions in oncology.
First author | University of Arizona/Harvard University/Research DPG | - | I have served as first author on multiple peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed publications on nutrition and cancer in my capacity as a student at both University of Arizona and Harvard University, and as an appointed member of the Research DPG leadership team. Being first author requires conducting experiments, analyzing data, exhaustive literature review, leading a team of co-authors, writing the actual manuscript and multiple oral presentations of the results. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
