Liaison Representative, representing AND - Appointed by AND and Elected by the ACoS/COC | American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | 2016 - 2022 | I have had the great honor of serving as the Academy's representative to the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). I serve on the CoC's Accreditation Committee. This committee is responsible for the accreditation of the 1500 accredited cancer centers in America ("The Joint Commission" for cancer centers). Building on the efforts of my Academy liaison predecessor, I was able to help create the accreditation standard, Oncology Nutrition Services, all patients treated at CoC-cancer centers must have an RDN on staff (or access to one).
Member, Quality Management Committee (QMC) and Chair, Definition of Terms Task Force - Appointed | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | 2016 - 2021 | During my appointment with the QMC, I was able to participate in the updates of our profession's core foundational documents: the Scope of Practice and the Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance for both RDNs and NDTRs. To be appointed to the committee with representatives from all areas of practice was so rewarding. In addition, I had the pleasure to serve as the Chair of the Definition of Terms Task Force whose charge is to define the many words and terms that define our profession for internal and external stakeholders. Yes, words do matter!
Member, Honors Committee - Appointed | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | 2019 - 2020 | I was given the tremendous honor of serving as a member of the Academy's Honors Committee. I did not take the responsibilities of this appointment lightly. To serve on this committee is a time-consuming and thought-provoking commitment. As a member, I tried diligently to give each and every nominee my utmost attention and to provide a fair and unbiased review of his/her application for the consideration of the Academy's highest awards and accolades. I was continually in awe and rewarded by seeing first-hand the dedication and service of our varied, diverse, and deserving members.
CDR Commissioner and Chair - Elected (Chair: 2011-2012) | Commission on Dietetic Registration | 2010 - 2013 | As an elected Commissioner and Chair, I actively participated in the following CDR projects: the creation and implementation of CDR-funded Foundation simulation, leadership, and grassroots marketing grant programs; implementation of the requirement of one (1) Ethics CPEU for practitioners; creation and implementation of doctoral and diversity scholarships; approval of the development of the Essential Practice Competencies project; affirmation to continue the administration of the NDTR credential; and collaboration with ACEND for the development of individualized supervised practice pathways.
Chair, Competency Assurance Panel, and Chair, Essential Practice Competencies Project - Appointed | Commission on Dietetic Registration | 2013 - 2015 | While the Chair of the Competency Assurance Panel, I led and participated in the creation of the Essential Practice Competencies which now serves as the guiding document for RDN and NDTR continuing professional re-certification. This was an in depth, multi-year project that brought together many Academy/CDR internal stakeholders, including the Quality Management Committee, ACEND, educators, and practicing & retired RDNs and NDTRs. The project culminated in a National Validation Study. Of note, the Academy was the first healthcare profession in America to have validated practice competencies. |
Quite simply, we must work together as an organization to keep our profession vital, relevant and meaningful for our members and the public we serve through our actions and our words. We are a diverse profession with many and varied areas of practice and expertise. Our member's professional and personal passion for food and nutrition makes a difference to our dynamic and changing world. The opportunity before us? To be an organization that has a unified and focused voice to communicate our purpose and value, which is the importance of health and well-being through food and nutrition.
I am a service-oriented, dedicated, open-minded, and inclusive individual and leader. I will strive to represent and advocate for our diverse Academy membership as a member of the Nominating Committee.
