#1 &3: Here's an example of leading positive change, generating solutions, promoting a transparent culture with innovative communication strategies: Upon being appointed interim Dept. Chair I learned of plans to dismantle the Dept. so I proposed an organizational plan merging a research Center into the Dept. This type of reorganization was novel and initially led to considerable resistance. Through collaborative teamwork, risk-taking, creating positive dialogue, communicating a clear strategy & the global impact of this merger, our intact Dept. is 'alive and well'.
#2: As SCAN Chair, I created a sub-unit devoted to cardiovascular and wellness nutrition, initiated taped 'webinars', and expanded our membership benefits. Skills: creative problem solver, transparent leadership style, strategic global thinker and belief in teamwork. Philosophy: with collaboration & communication, barriers become opportunities.Decision making is not emotional & reactive, but data based. |

Leadership Experience
Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
Chair, Chair-Elect, Education Director, Development Director | SCAN | - | 1) Elected Position (SCAN Chair): Created CV-Wellness Subunit, CV Wellness e-newsletter, enhanced member benefits including webinars, developed an educational format called SCANNERS (scientific, concise, authoritative nutrition nuggets for everyday reference); created increased opportunities for membership mentoring and professional advancement via creative educational programming.
Committee on Professional Development, (CPD) | Academy | - | 2) Appointed Position (CPD): Together with the committee identified emerging and core educational topics for FNCE inclusion. As an example, FNCE 2015 included 10 session tracks in the arena of advanced sports nutrition. This was the first year that this focused track became an inclusion in FNCE and I shared responsibility for developing this track. The goal is that each year a 'cutting edge', previously unexplored educational track will be available via FNCE.
Academy representative to the American College of Sports Medicine | Academy-ACSM | - | 3) Appointed: Academy representative to ACSM: It is critical that RDNs understand the landscape and interrelationship of activity & exercise on nutritional needs and energy balance. RDNs and other health care professionals, such as exercise specialists, must mutually respect scope of practice, the synergy between our two areas and the value of interdisciplinary practice. The goal is to enhance and maintain the relationship between the Academy and highly respected organizations such as ACSM on behalf of the profession. We have been working to solidifying these understandings and opportunities for the RDN. My accomplishment was being active in the massive team effort to bring the Academy to the table with ACSM and to continue fostering this inter-disciplinary relationship.
Sponsorship Task Force | Academy | - | As part of this committee, we are attempting to create an approved organizational guideline and procedure with transparent communication and ethically based scientific principles regarding Academy sponsorship. |
Personal and Campaign Statements
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
Our future is a kaleidoscope of opportunity when the BOD makes bold decisions and prioritizes investing in future generations of practitioners. Personally, my professional growth resulted from relationships, mentoring and opportunities gained from participation in dietetic practice groups. (I am a member ~ 9 DPGs). Therefore, I believe the BOD can best be instrumental in RDN professional growth via communicating directly with members & DPGs via quarterly Q & A webinars.
Campaign Statement
Helping optimize professional empowerment should be the BOD’s highest strategic priority. Vote 4 Hope #hopeforRDNs
