Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
Chair | Renal Dietitians Practice Group | 2021 - 2024 | I used my experience as a leader to improve processes and tools for RPG, including implementing monthly EC meetings with consent agenda, developing processes for awards and scholarships, completion of a new strategic plan and supporting tactics, and implementing new member benefits. I collaborated with the Council on Renal Nutrition Executive Committee to develop goals of mutual interest, with a focus on promoting MNT in the care of people with kidney disease. Through outreach and mentoring of less experienced volunteers/leaders, I decreased Executive Committee vacancies to nearly zero.
Vice-Chair/Chair | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Council on Future Practice | 2021 - 2023 | As a member and, later, chair of CFP, I co-authored the first change driver brief (on VUCA), helping to pioneer this new brief format. I led the engagement subcommittee in developing strategies and messaging for disseminating change driver information as new briefs are released. I established monthly calls with the House Leadership Team to enhance collaboration between HOD and CFP, resulting in successful joint projects. I had the opportunity to serve as a liaison to the BOD, increasing my understanding of the operations of the Academy.
Delegate | Academy House of Delegates | 2015 - 2021 | In my two terms as Delegate representing CA, I participated in dialogues on many critical issues, including malnutrition, public health, health equity, and the transformation of HOD. I served as a table facilitator for 4 years, continuing to serve in this role for another 2 years after my term ended. I led the Town Hall Subcommittee to create a playbook to empower delegates to hold town hall meetings with their constituents. I served on the Volunteerism task force, supporting the development of the dialogue on this important topic and contributing to the background materials.
Co-Chair of Delegates | California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | 2018 - 2020 | As Co-Chair of Delegates on the CA Academy board, I collaborated with my fellow delegates to improve communication with members, developing a group of "Valued Information Providers" (VIPs) to inform our work in HOD. As a member of the Human Resources committee, I served on the Finance Task Force, which convened to review the operations, policies, and finances of the organization. After benchmarking expenses and practices with other large affiliates, the Task Force transformed the CA Academy, allowing for reallocation of resources from overhead to more direct member benefits.
Member, ESRD Health Equity Board | ESRD National Coordinating Center | 2021 - | As the only dietitian and member of the dialysis center team on the board, I use my experience to advocate for resources to address the unique challenges faced by people on dialysis, including social determinants of health and barriers to care. I have actively contributed to the development of training tools for dialysis care teams and the nephrology community to advance health equity, including Structural Competency Training for Kidney Healthcare Professionals and Improving Health Equity - Addressing Food Insecurity. |
Our world is rapidly changing. In our complex and ambiguous environment, past actions may not predict future success. To ensure our profession continues to be relevant and impactful, we must learn to identify trends with potential to impact our profession to develop new strategies. We must look ahead to identify the needs of our environment and of our members, and we must have the courage to implement bold strategies to achieve our goals. As an experienced leader trained in foresight and knowledge-based strategic governance, I am excited for the opportunity to help lead the Academy forward.
The future of our profession begins NOW. A big-picture, strategic thinker, I will work to connect the dots within the Academy to achieve transparency and alignment in developing strategies to address causes of greatest importance to our members.
