Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
Treasurer | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | 2015 - 2018 | When Treasurer, leading AND Finance and Audit Committee for the BOD with AND Accountant. Leading discussions, identifying issues, making recommendations to the BOD for both AND and ANDF. Budgets are moving targets, monthly FAC conference calls, leading decision making for changes and modifications is a team effort rather than an individual effort. We have achieved clean external audits.
Director at Large, BOD | Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics | 2012 - 2015 | The role of the Director is often a liaison to an Academy committee. I served on the NCP-SL Committee and their marketing sub-committee contributing new ways to enhance member and educator awareness of the NCP -SL materials, supporting case scenarios to assist in teach this; this is now the NCP Research Committee. As liaison to NDEP, one of the specific goals was improving communication between BOD and NDEP and my efforts were through greater visibility and feedback on their conference calls and their FNCE sessions. This interaction increased trust. However when the NDA (Nutrition Dietetic Associate) was proposed by the BOD and President McCollum, there was strong opposition from the educators. The President asked me to Chair the Task Force to deliberate on the NDA category and provide options for the BOD to consider. The NDA was controversial, led to spirited dialog, and in the end, a smooth outcome that re-focused on the 4 yr degree graduate being more strongly encouraged to take the NDTR exam where there would be the expectation of continuing education. Since that time the number of BS degreed graduates (not going for the RDN) who are taking the NDTR exam has steadily increased. A good outcome for the profession.
Coding and Coverage Committee | AND | 2009 - 2012 | Served as Vice Chair and Chair 2011, 2012. The committee was charged with addressing issues related to MNT Coding (CPT codes) and coverage for MNT. The Committee developed and promoted webinars to educate members, reviewed activities of the AMA RUC regarding codes, aspects of reimbursement through our long term liaison on this AMA committee. The committee led FNCE continuing education sessions and roundtables for members. |

Strategic Planning Task Force | AND | 2007 - 2008 | Appointed by ADA President Connie Diekman for the Board of Directors. The group was charged with recommending changes to ADA's Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Plan for the future, which were adopted by the BOD.
LPPC | AND | 2006 - 2009 | Served as Chair (2008-9) The group is charged with setting and leading the legislative agenda for the organization and the annual PPW in Washington DC. One of the new strategic initiatives developed was an award to reward and showcase a dietetic education program who integrated policy advocacy into their educational program. We then for the first time had the award winner present at FNCE so that other programs could see possibilities for integrating advocacy at the state or national level. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
Touching lives in every sector of our country and truly the world is the Academy's opportunity. The health of a nation can be measured by the food and nutrition wellbeing of its people and an environment that supports access, quality and safety. Dietitians are the investigators who create new knowledge, the practitioners who translate food and nutrition knowledge to populations and individuals, the leaders who bring policies to life and the advocates who empower others to lead with purpose.
Campaign Statement
