CDR Board Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management (CSOWM) |
|
A highlight of my career specializing in obesity and weight management is my involvement with the Board Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management (CSWOM) credential through every step from concept to implementation, and serving as a subject matter expert alongside an interdisciplinary group of healthcare professionals. The idea of board certification vs. training was sparked to have a credential that encompassed the knowledge and skills healthcare professionals working in weight management would possess and as a compliment to the American Board of Obesity Medicine credential available for physicians. During the process of CDR approving the CSOWM credential, I co-led a group of experts in obesity and weight management, representing organizations of healthcare professionals and the Obesity Action Coalition representing people living with obesity, to petition CDR to have this credential an interdisciplinary one. l have also served on CDR’s Specialist Certification Review Panel |

In my position as Chair of the WM DPG, and in advocating for the CSOWM to be an interdisciplinary credential, I met with various groups of members specializing on weight management and consequently led the development and implementation of a survey for member input. I listened respectfully to all members opinions including perceived benefits and concerns about inviting other professionals to collaborate on the credential. I worked together with other leaders and members with strong opinions to ensure they believed their voices were heard. The survey results indicated members saw more benefits than concern. The WM and DCE DPGs then petitioned CDR for the interdisciplinary designation to work alongside colleagues instead of in our focused specialties. This included presenting member feedback to a meeting of the CDR Board. |
What do you see as opportunities for the future of the nutrition and dietetics profession?
If elected, my goals are to continue advocating for the personal and professional benefits of obtaining advanced practice and specialist certifications, ensure the certifications are aligned with the functions of the nutrition professional specializing in those areas, and to explore unique and visionary methods for maintaining all credentials that are meaningful and impactful.
