Leadership Experience
Leadership Position | Organization | Years Involved in the Organization | My specific leadership contributions, achievements and outcomes: | Leadership Skills used in this position: |
N. C. Counsel of Renal Nutrition Chair | National Kidney Foundation | 2015 - 2016 | Served as Chair to encourage volunteers to work to improve the quality of life of renal patients. We re-activated a mentoring committee pairing mentors and mentees. Encouraged new members to get involved and be active volunteers. | As a leader, I saw a need to create nutrition education tools that are low literacy (at a = 5th grade learning level) to be used during dialysis, because patients can focus on nutrition education. I used my skills to develop personalized puzzles to aid in understanding how to identify nutrients on food labels to avoid the consequences of consuming too much of one or more unhealthy nutrients. My desired outcome is for patients' monthly labs to be measured within the suggested range. When labs are within the suggested range, they are presented on "gold" paper and that is celebrated by everyone in the center. The patients have been receptive and want to continue working with me as their dietitian. They request that I not transfer to another center. |
Nominating Committee Chair | NOBIDAN | 2017 - 2018 | Advertised for volunteers and filled out a full slate for the ballot. Supported the membership committee to plan and execute area meetings that increased awareness of the MIG and Dietetics profession. Continued mentoring committee efforts, pairing mentees with mentors, supporting students preparing for internships, exams, and job searches. | Using the proper Academy procedures, we worked together as a team to have a complete slate of candidates on the ballot to continue the smooth operation of the MIG for the next year. Working together with the team, students in need were paired with mentors to assist them with resume writing, and encouraging them to complete their dietetic programs. It was often time done remotely, but most of the time interactions were face to face. Mentoring is very satisfying knowing that the needs of students are being met. |
Mentoring Committee Chair | NOBIDAN | 2018 - 2021 | The mentoring committee is responsible for pairing mentees with mentors to support the success of those in need by developing resumes, talking through situations, supporting studying or other issues as identified. I started an effort to set up a working relationship with the Dietetic Program Directors at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. These efforts are to strengthen relationships and foster partnerships to aid in sustaining dietetic programs. | My leadership and interpersonal skills made it possible to set up face-to-face meetings and in the virtual space to support directors with small programs at HBCUs that otherwise need support with resources, mentoring students, support with classes, being prepared for surveys, being aware of grants, and/or help with recruiting. |
Chair-Elect | NOBIDAN | 2021 - 2022 | I supported the Chair's efforts to set up new relationships with other MIGs, DPGs and agencies outside of the Academy that align with NOBIDAN's goals. Served on the committee to develop the National Baptist Convention, Inc toolkit. This proved to be a 2-year effort. Served on the committee for virtual FNCE which included the first Zoom meeting with the Dietetic Program Directors at the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). | I reached out to the dietetic program directors at HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities), developed a rapport and scheduled a Zoom call with them to introduce them to each other. We discussed the concerns they face in their programs and offered each other support to strengthen their programs. The outcome was that the directors would continue to meet frequently. |
Chair | NOBIDAN | 2022 - 2023 | After cultivating added sponsorships, relationships with other MIG and DPG partners and with the support of a strong FNCE committee, I executed the first face-to-face FNCE after 2 virtual years. This included a luncheon for the Dietetic Program Directors of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The National Baptist Convention, Inc toolkit project was completed after 2 years of work. I attended the ceremonial signing in Alabama. | I responded to the request of the National Baptist Convention, Inc. to the Academy to serve on the committee to develop a Nutrition Toolkit. I am familiar with the population of the NBC population, so I was one of the leaders to work on the team to research, identify materials and develop videos that are faith-based and relevant to those of African descent. The outcome was that the toolkit was completed and made available on the NBC, the Academy and NOBIDAN websites. |
